A novel data registry used to improve access to early steps in kidney transplant

The newly released E-STAR Annual Data Report (ADR) is a first-of-its-kind, publicly available resource providing multi-regional insights into early kidney transplant access across the United States. Using data from the Early Steps to Transplant Access Registry (E-STAR), the report highlights patterns in referral, evaluation, and waitlisting, identifies variation across regions and centers, and incorporates patient experiences to inform quality improvement and policy efforts. By making these data transparent and actionable, the ADR supports efforts to improve equitable access to kidney transplantation.

Our interactive E-STAR Transplant Center Quality Dashboard offers a transparent view into how the kidney transplantation network is working to improve access to transplants. Built using data collected through E-STAR, this tool highlights critical steps in the transplant process—referral, evaluation start, and waitlisting—with breakdowns by race, ethnicity, sex, age, and insurance status. Further, these reports provide information on referral, evaluation start, and waitlisting rates over time, the percentage of preemptive referrals, and the median time between each step in the transplant process. This novel tool is designed to support quality improvement and outreach efforts within centers, transparency within the process, and informed decision-making among those within the kidney disease community.
